On March 1st, 1774, she was born in Verona into the Marquises of Canossa dynasty. She found her charism in the Church after many experiences and trials because she was sensitive to the needs of the poor in her city and was led by a profound religious sense. She would choose to live the Gospel radically for God alone, not in the monastic form, but through dedication and service to the poor.

She officially left the Canossa family’s castle on May 8th, 1808, and began working with a few friends to collect and educate young girls from the St. Zeno neighbourhood. Later, the Daughters of Charity Institute spread to other Italian cities like Trent, Bergamo, Venice, and Milan, and Magdalene expanded her connections with civic and religious leaders to win support for her own and other philanthropic endeavours.

She founded the Congregation of the Sons of Charity on May 23, 1831, with assistance from a Venetian priest and two Bergamo laymen. She engaged a large number of individuals in her vast apostolic activities, making them co-responsible with her for promoting charity.

She passed away in Verona on April 10, 1835. Pope Pius XII declared her Blessed on December 8, 1941, and Pope John Paul II canonised her on October 2, 1988.
