You may well recognize Casey as the delivery bot of Agility Robotics, the basis of Digit. If you’re following all of the technological advances, though, you have no doubt that he started life as an ostrich-inspired Casey. The robot has all the legs and no more.

In addition to fueling Ility Gelity’s commercial ambitions, the robot has proven to be a solid platform for bilateral space exploration. Announced in 2017 by reg Reagan State University professor Jonathan Hunt, Casey was created with a પરિ 1 million grant from DOD – a pretty familiar story from the robotics world.

Today, a team from the Dynamics Robotics Laboratory at OSU’s College Ledge Engineering highlighted ways for Casey to move toward its bipartisan limitations. The team says the robot was capable of running 5K untitled on a single charge. Casey won’t soon be able to beat any human world record, but the 53-minute (and three-second) run was still an impressive performance for Tech.

The robot’s run time included about 6.5 minutes of troubleshooting, as the team had to deal with an extremely hot computer and a botched turn that knocked him off his feet.

Ph.D., “Casey is a very efficient robot because of how it is designed and built, and we were able to really reach the limits of hardware and show what it can do,” Ph.D. .D. Student Jeremy Dow said in a statement.

According to the team, Casey essentially taught himself to run using a reinforcement learning algorithm that allowed him to figure out how to stay upright by shifting his balance while operating the system.

“Deep Reinforcement Learning AI has a powerful methodology that opens up skills like running, skipping and walking up stairs,” added Yesh Godse, an undergraduate student.

In May of this year, the OSU team also demonstrated how Casey can walk up and down stairs without the help of a laser or id non-board camera.
