Everyone tries to get us out – or stay – and bring us into the game. Seriously. Piloton, Netflix, Zoom, Ticket OK, Amazon, Apple Paul and Google are all experimenting with video games or getting bigger.

What’s going on?

The direct answer to this is that people globally are already spending a lot of time and money on video games, and established sports companies and newcomers are focusing on all sorts of interactive digital experiments to use all our time and money.

I’m excited for this development, though playing my own avid video game ended in a brickbreaker era for BlackBerry. It looks like we’re in the middle of rethinking what a “video game” is and what online online idle time can be – more engaging and social, possibly less, and a little less idle doomscrolling. (Or I’ll read more in this. Yes, it will be just about money.)

Whatever the motivation, the games soon seem vague. New features on Zoom – Yoop, Zoom It – include Poker, Trivia and Mystery Games. Peloton, maker of 500 2,500 exercise bicycles, is releasing a game that allows people to command the pedal power of a rolling virtual wheel. Netflix confirmed this week that it plans to add video games to its entertainment online entertainment service. We like video games or sell game subscriptions to varying degrees from Facebook, Ticket OK, Amazon, Apple Pal and Google. (The New York Times also makes great strides in digital games and puzzles.)

Video games are a big business that has grown even during the coronavirus epidemic, so it’s no surprise that more companies want to be part of the action. A recent report from Accenture estimates that global sales related to sports exceed the combined revenue of movies and music. That figure includes sales of traditional video games for computers and consoles, smartphone games, advertising in games and more. There is also cultural relevance to video games, as Olympic organizers showed off the game’s music at the opening ceremony this week.

We may really need to change our terminology, as many new digital games differ from how video games can traditionally be defined and imagined – that cinematic world of PlayStation or Xbox.

Just as smartphones have introduced us to simple games that optimize on the unique features of phones such as gyroscopes and internet not-the-go internet connections, so too many new games blur the lines between video games and other types of social activities. There are video games between Pokemon Go, Fortnite and us, but there are stripes for friends, pop culture moments, opportunities for political planning and more.

The thrill of many new game experiments is that they signal a step forward in which and online and smartphone media always reflect what comes first – many podcasts were like talk radio, Netflix was like TV and news was like online news. Were like.

I know that sports are not all provocative paragons of human social connection, but it seems that something exciting is happening. More confusing to come to new digital forms that emphasize interaction rather than passive reading, watching or listening.

We’ll get more sophisticated games on the cutting edge of technology and more content that doesn’t fit video game b fitx to challenge our brain, body and social interactions. I’m excited to see it all.
